Industrial Automation and Mechatronics

Tomorrow will be enrollment day of Mindanao State University - Iligan Institute of Technology for the school year 2008-2009 and one more subject to go, specifically the field of Industrial Statistics, then I will be a full pledged graduate of Bachelor of Science Major in Industrial Automation and Mechatronics which will be my second course after Industrial Automation and Controls. The department of Industrial Automation and Controls of the said university is offering these two courses which will be a stepping stone towards industrial automation expertise.

I am pursuing this second course of mine while working in a steel manufacturing company. One of the largest in South East Asia. Working in the morning for 8 regular hours and continuing in the afternoon for my formal education.

But I do enjoy the wonders of technology and taking courses like these, it helps me garner new insights and knowledge which will be a great help to make tasks and job orders during work easier.

It even make me competitive in various fields like electronics, industrial instrumentation, electromechanical, mechatronic technology, pneumatic and hydraulic systems and in the automation and control expertise.

So when i would finish this Industrial Statistics subject which is the only requirement i have left to graduate the BSIAM course, i am planning to take various National Competencies exam especially in industrial automation and mechatronics to further enhance knowledge and skills.

I know this field is wide and there are various competencies in terms of employment and expertise but i will be making out the best for my passion.

Wow! I also delved in Industrial Statistics, although not having gone to a formal studies. When I was still a Turn Supervisor, SPC or Statistical Process Control was the "management initiative" project of NSC's management then as part of its Total Quality Management [TQM] program. It was sort of the foundation of our quest for ISO back then!

GE's Six-Sigma is also part of Industrial Statistics especially with the Design of Experiments. At GSPI, however, Six Sigma is only for show, not unlike TPM and ISO! Even the Six-Sigma projects at its Ispat plants, the Six-Sigma structure were patterned after them, are not so significant as the projects done by Pinoys' Six SIgma black belt-candidates, however, the latter are not afforded the same management support as their Indian counterparts. Even the Minitab software used by Six Sigma practioners at GSPI is a "cracked" one plus the fact that there are no available computers to do the statistical part of the study. Another lack of "management support" is there are only a handful--the last count, about three--reference books on Six Sigma found in the whole of GSPI!

At present, Industrial Statistics is similar to Six Sigma, thus you might be better off if you undergo the Green and Black Belt seminars offered by GSPI's Management Initiative. This IS-6-Sigma tandem is a growing global trend, see for example Arizona State University.

Last but not the least, an unsolicited advice: consider also a Master Black Belt certification!

Good Luck to all your endeavors, and maybe someday will cross our paths there at GSPI! By the way, I'm also enrolled at MSU-IIT, and hope to graduate this October.
